Title: WPA-built underpasses for the Great Northern Railroad and the Northern Pacific Railroad, Fargo (N.D.)
Date: 1939-1942
Inscription/Marks: On the front: a red mark in the right margin. On the back: col. 75/567, "Underpass at Fargo-G.N.R.R. and N.P.R.R. have underpasses at 10th St", and several edit numbers.
Summary: The image shows two parallel underpasses which have been built to carry pedestrian and vehicular traffic under the railroad tracks of the Great Northern Railroad and also the Northern Pacific Railroad. The overpass in the foreground, carrying the Great Northern trains is supported by fluted piers in the Art Deco design style and the girders are metal. The far bridge over Tenth Street is styled differently, still Art Deco in design, but a more complex and elegant version. The piers and concrete railing posts are fluted and dentils run the length of the railing at its base. Both bridges are single span steel stringer types. The Northern Pacific bridge still exists and is on the National Register of Historic Places as 32CS4472. The G.N.R.R. overpass structure is no longer in place. (2019)
