Title: Barnes County Courthouse, Valley City (N.D.)
Date: 1936-1942
Inscription/Marks: On the back: col.75/651, "5" in a circle, and "Valley City Mr. Karl Olson-McFarland Studio".
Summary: A series of wide sets of stairs leads to the entrance. The courthouse, built in 1925 as a replacement for an earlier burned structure, was designed by the Minneapolis, Minnesota firm of Toltz, King, and Day, Inc. The style is a mixture of Neo-classical and Colonial, popular in the 1920s. The front facade is symmetrical with a central portico having four tall, free-standing Doric columns. Three stories tall, the walls faced with cut Indiana limestone. The building's cornice is dentilled and the pediment is balustraded. In the pediment this phrase is chiseled: Built By the People of Barnes County To Perpetuate Civic Order and Justice
