Title: The 1903 High School Valley City (N.D.)
Date: 1903
Inscription/Marks: On the page below the mounted photograph: col. 76-2, and "High School---Valley City, N.D."
Summary: The details of the newly constructed Valley City (N.D.) High School give a nod to both the Prairie School of Architecture and the Craftsman movement. It is a two-story brick building with a hipped roof, attic dormers and a rectangular footprint. Brackets support the overhangs and darker accent in the brick coursing lend a horizontality to the overall appearance. The third and final addition to the complex was completed in 1903 and is a separate brick building, also two-stories with a hipped roof and attic dormers. A pleasing flare is seen in the lines of the dormers and the roof. The details are slightly different from the two other parts of the school block, but it is sensitive to the architectural style of the earlier structures. The entrance is above-grade and within a shallow front extension containing two arched openings. A large arched window looks onto the porch that is created on the left side, and the school doorway is in the right side arched porch. A rail fence separates the snowy yard from the street. Located on Central Avenue between 4th St. NW and 5th St. NW. The 1903 building survived the fire of 1907. In the background is the Valley City Courthouse, brick in the Classical Revival style. Mounted in a scrapbook dedicated to the Grade and High School in Valley City, North Dakota.
