Collection: 00076 - Valley City School Photograph Collection
Folder: 0001
Item: 00014
Title: Students and teacher in their Grade One Elementary School classroom in Valley City (N.D.)
Date: 1903
Inscription/Marks: On the page below the mounted photograph: col. 76-14, and "Grade One--Valley City, N.D."
Summary: Twenty-five boys and girls sit at their desks while one boy stands by the Grade One teacher in the classroom of the Valley City (N.D.) elementary school. Tall windows look out onto the brick sides of the High School building next door, and let in needed light. On the inside wall and on the walls between the windows are blackboards on which seasonal drawings of turkeys and a calendar for the month of December set inside a star outline. The calendar indicates that the image dates to 1903. The girls wear white pinafores over their dresses as was the fashion, and the boys wear dark wool jackets or home-knit jerseys. The teacher is dressed in a long dark dress, relieved by a jaunty bit of lace at the neck, and her hair is piled in a pompadour ala Gibson Girls. Mounted in a scrapbook dedicated to the Grade and High School in Valley City, North Dakota.
