Title: A boy reads in front of the Grade Two class in the school at Valley City (N.D.)
Date: 1903
Inscription/Marks: On the page below the mounted photograph: col. 76-16, and "Grade Two--Valley City, N.D."
Summary: In a large, airy Grade Two classroom in Valley City (N.D.), boys and girls face forward and listen as a student reads a passage of a book aloud. The teacher watches from beside her desk. At one of the blackboards on the side wall, a small girl writes with chalk. Paper chains loop the tops of the blackboards as decorations for the upcoming holiday season. A turkey has been drawn on a blackboard. Pictures of important people such as George Washington hang above the blackboards. The girls wear pinafores over their dresses, and the teacher wears a pompadour and a white blouse and long skirt. This section of the building was built in 1894, an addition was made in 1898, and the high school built in 1903. All but the High School burned down in 1907. Mounted in a scrapbook dedicated to the Grade and High School in Valley City, North Dakota.
