Title: The teacher lectures the students of Grade Five of the Elementary School in Valley City (N.D.)
Date: 1903
Inscription/Marks: On the page below the mounted photograph: col. 76-20, and "Grade Five--Valley City, N.D."
Summary: The boys and girls at their desks in the Grade Five classroom of the Elementary School in Valley City (N.D.) fix their attention to an out-of-sight blackboard as the teacher directs her lecture. The teacher gestures with her pointer to the side blackboard. Her hair is in a fashionable pompadour, and her long-sleeved, long-skirted dress has contrasting piping at the waist, sleeves, and shoulders. Decorations on the blackboards suggest this is a December 1903 scene. This section of the building was built in 1894, an addition was made in 1898, and the high school built in 1903. All but the High School burned down in 1907. Mounted in a scrapbook dedicated to the Grade and High School in Valley City, North Dakota.
