Title: Students and teachers gather in the snow in front of the Grade School Building, Valley City (N.D.)
Date: 1903
Inscription/Marks: On the page below the mounted photograph: col. 76-23, and "Grade Building--Valley City, N.D."
Summary: In the snowy yard in front of the school in Valley City (N.D.), the student body and the teachers have gathered for a photograph that includes them all in this record of the newly complete school property. Several smaller boys are kneeling down and making snowballs. The Valley City, North Dakota public school complex is shown as it appeared between the construction of the last of two additions to the original 1894 building and the date when a fire burned most of the school. The picture dates to the winter of 1903-1904. The school 's original building is at the left, dominated by a domed bell tower. The brick two-story structure has a hipped roof and dormers in the attic portions. The tower is set at the front left corner of the main elevation. The 1903 addition is also two-stories and brick with an attic dormer in the gable front. The windows are large and double-hung except in the tower portion. The details of the buildings give a nod to the Prairie School of Architecture. Brackets support the overhangs and darker accent in the brick coursing lend a horizontality to the overall appearance. The third and final addition to the complex was completed in 1903 and is a separate brick building, also two-stories with a hipped roof and attic dormers. The details are slightly different from the two other parts of the school block, but it is sensitive to the architectural style of the earlier structures. A line of young trees lines the front of the school buildings, and a rail fence separates the yard from the street. Located on Central Avenue between 4th St. NW and 5th St. NW. Only the 1903 building survived the fire of 1907. Mounted in a scrapbook dedicated to the Grade and High School in Valley City, North Dakota.
