Date: 05/06/1976
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 00080-0008-00201 replaces "0080-box1-f4-07","4", "Million and one tree planted at Ed Flanagan farmstead", and "May 21 1976" stamped.
Summary: Ed Flanagan and Governor Art Link are busy with shovels as they plant a small spruce tree on the Flanagan farmstead in rural Burleigh County, N.D., in May, 1976. A farm structure and a wooden slat fence are behind the men. A program initiated by the Burleigh County Soil Conservation Service had been behind the planting of one million trees in the county, this tree being considered the 1,000,001th. Other such programs, nationally, encouraged urban planting for beautification and shade benefit, rather than the need for soil stabilization, as in the rural areas. Taken by a Bismarck Tribune photographer, possibly Leo LaLonde, Steve Wallick, Ted Quanrud, or Jerry Anderson, all working at the paper during this period, and part of a collection of several decades of newspaper photographs donated by the Tribune.
