Title: Shoulder blade implement from the Ernst Steinbrueck collection, North Dakota
Date: 1890-1918
Creator: Steinbrueck, E. R. (Ernst Reinhold),--1836-
Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86-46, "shoulder blade implement perfect fine", and "Steinbrueck".
Summary: Photographed against a wood plank wall are two pieces of an Indian bone tool from the Missouri River Valley in North Dakota. Likely associated with agricultural practices of the Hidatsa. Deep wear is visible on the scapula, likely of a deer. A smaller section of bone, also used as a tool, is alongside the shoulder blade tool. Steinbrueck came to North Dakota in 1890 and became an active collector and chronicler of the cultures of the Indian people in the region around Morton County (N.D.). He died in 1918 and much of his collection resides in the State Historical Society, for which he acted as the first Field Officer.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
