Title: Hides And Eats softens hide on a scythe blade on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation

Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86-57, "Woman softening hide by rubbing around scythe", and a tapped strip of paper bearing the words "Hides and Eats working a hide (Crows Hearts Place).
Summary: In a work area defined by a sturdy log scaffold, a woman sits and works softening a piece of hide by running it over a section of scythe blade mounted to a post. Another piece of hide is tied to a horizontal pole under the protection of the scaffold platform. The wide river valley is in the hazy distance. The woman, identified as Hides And Eats, wears a belted cotton dress and a dark head scarf. The location is on the property of Crows Heart. The image was taken to document the research into aspects of the cultures of the Mandan and Hidatsa on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation by noted musicologist Frances Densmore. Research was conducted in 1912, 1915, and 1918 by Ms. Densmore.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
