Title: Hairy Coat's wife, Not A Woman, making pottery inside an earth lodge

Inscription/Marks: On the front: image is heavily photo-edited, a line of letters only partly visible, (IV-67-1911) and indicate origin as from the Wilson photos, and "Hidatsa Potter" inked on the matboard. On the back: col. 86-59, and a inaccurate note of identification dated 12/6/68.
Summary: The image, heavily edited for use in a printed reproduction, shows a Hidatsa potter shaping a traditional vessel. She is seated on the floor of an earth lodge, wearing a loose garment and braided hair. The potter is identified as Not A Woman, wife of Hairy Coat. The image is from the records made on Hidatsa culture by ethnologist Gilbert Livingstone Wilson between 1906 and 1919. Labeled IV-67-1911 in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
