Title: Frederick Wilson sketching a woman making traditional Hidatsa burden basket inside a log house

Summary: A woman sits on a buffalo hide on the floor of a log cabin and works to weave a burden basket in the traditional design of her Hidatsa culture. A finished basket is beside her, a sewing machine and a wooden dresser with mirror are behind her in the room. Directly beside her a young man, identified as the artist brother and fellow ethnographer of Gilbert Livingstone Wilson, Frederick. He has a table on which he is sketching the activity he is observing. He has fair hair, suspenders and an earnest air. The basket-maker wears a head-scarf and a long print dress. The image is from the records made on Hidatsa culture by ethnologist Gilbert Livingstone Wilson between 1906 and 1919. The labeled 39-1912 indicates a date of 1912.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
