Title: A Hidatsa woman, likely Owl Woman, with a digging stick in a field

Inscription/Marks: On the front: IX-58-1916. On the back: col. 86-74.
Summary: A woman in a dark head-scarf and plaid dress is ready to thrust a digging stick into the prairie soil. It is likely that this is the Hidatsa woman known as Owl Woman, near her Fort Berthold Reservation home. The image is related to the ethnographic research on Hidatsa culture undertaken on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation by Gilbert Livingstone Wilson and his brother Fredrick, between 1906 and 1919. Dated 1916, and marked with "IX-58-1916" which corresponds to the Minnesota Historical Society collection of Wilson's research.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
