Title: Two small Hidatsa girls in regalia by their log home on the Fort Berthold Indian reservation
Date: Circa 1910
Inscription/Marks: On the front: the title "Two Little Indian Maids". On the back: col. 86-533, and postcard marks.
Summary: A postcard photograph entitled "Two Little Indian Maids", this shows two girls about 4 and 5 years old dressed in traditional Native American regalia. A rough log cabin and a wooden chair are behind them. Though unidentified, they are likely Hidatsa, Mandan, or Arikara children, dressed in regalia appropriate to their tribal affiliation. Long dentalium earrings fall to below the waists of their wool dresses. The dresses have dentalium yokes, and different designs are worked into the lower parts of the skirts. The girls hold hands. They each wear lavishly beaded leggings and moccasins, with similar but not identical geometric patterns. Likely taken around 1910

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
