Title: Two women, a girl, and a small boy beside a Hidatsa sweat lodge on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation
Date: Circa 1910
Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86-641.
Summary: At the edge of a scatter of buildings on the landscape of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, a canvas-covered sweat lodge stands beside two women and two youngsters. The older of the two women is wrapped in a shawl and looks pensively at the camera. A small girl next to her has her hand to her chin, and stands close to her mother's long skirts. A little boy in a neckerchief and hat stands around the curve of the sweat lodge. All wear moccasins. Likely taken around 1910, coinciding with research and documentation of the Hidatsa and Mandan Indians and their culture.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
