Title: Young woman holds her shawl-wrapped baby with an older boy at her side in a tent camp on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation

Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86-664, postcard marks, stamp, and cancellation date, and the message noted in the summary.
Summary: Printed as a postcard from Gilbert Wilson to a family member, the scene shows a lovely young mother holding a baby wrapped in her shawl beside a small boy in traditional regalia in a tent camp. The woman is unidentified and her dress is of long and full print fabric. The boy has arm bands on the upper part of his shirt sleeves, braided hair, and decorated leggings. The door of one of the tents behind the trio has the flaps open. Taken between 1906 and 1919, and dated June 2?, 11 A.M. on a Mandan, ND postal cancellation. The message, sent from ethnologist Gilbert Wilson to Miss Frances E. Wilson, 2635 Polk St. NE, Minneapolis is odd. "Arrived all O.K. Dont suicide. Tues. (signed) G. L. W."

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
