Title: Two young girls, one in traditional regalia, stand solemnly by a tent
Date: Circa 1910
Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86-665, and postcard marks.
Summary: Printed as a postcard image, the scene presents two young girls standing together by an open tent on the Fort Berthold Indian reservation. One girl, braids pulled back with a ribbon, solemnly wears traditional regalia consisting of a wool dress with the shoulder or cape of the bodice decorated with elk teeth, the hem and ends of sleeves finished with contrasting fabric, beaded moccasins and leggings, a bead breastplate, belt, and a shawl folded over one arm. The other girl is dressed up as well, but in a cloth dress with tucks on the bodice, and a belted waist, worn over cloth leggings and high-topped boots. A shawl is folded over her arm as well. Likely taken around 1910 on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation during a period of intense study of Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara cultures.
