Title: A log cabin on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation

Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86-851, multiple Ewald stamps, "Unidentified house-Ft. Berthold Res-1915-Densmore", and "Rabbit Head ? (?)".
Summary: Close-up, a weathered log cabin, possibly belonging to the Hidatsa Indian Rabbit Head, seems virtually abandoned. A desiccated animal hide is staked to the cabin exterior, and the double-hung window is wide open. On the ground the weeds around the house grow up through a rough homemade wooden ladder. The corners of the shaped log cabin appear to be square-notched. The roof is sod. Beyond the yard runs a post and barb wire fence. The image is attributed to research conducted on the Fort Berthold Indian reservation between 1912 and 1915 by Frances Densmore.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
