Title: Model of a Hidatsa "twin" earth lodge being framed at the Goodbird property on Fort Berthold Indian Reservation
Date: 1918
Creator: Wilson, Gilbert Livingstone,--1868-1930
Inscription/Marks: On the front: XI-21-1918, which corresponds to numbering of Minnesota Historical Society Wilson photos. On the back: col. 86-906.
Summary: This is one of a series of photographs detailing the construction of a small-scale model of a traditional Hidatsa "twin" earth lodge. This interesting dwelling variation was fashioned by connecting a larger earth lodge to a much smaller conical lodge by means of a covered and enclosed corridor. The model pictured is being built under the direction of Buffalo Bird Woman. The purpose for this variant is to provide a space easier to keep warm for older people or small children that is still within a common structure. The process is documented in many photographs, this is one of the stages recorded. Taken in 1918 during the Gilbert L. Wilson ethnographic study of the Hidatsa living on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, and marked with a number associated with his collection housed in the Minnesota Historical Society.
