Title: Four children stand by the entry passage of an Arikara earth lodge on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation

Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86/983, the credit stamp noted in the summary, and "15982-Ft. Berthold Dakota Old Style Ree Lodge".
Summary: Two young girls in faded cloth dresses stand at the left of the entry passage of an Arikara earth lodge, while two lads in pants and wrapped in plaid blankets pose on the right side. The earth lodge is set in a yard with several log cabins around it. A hide robe hangs on a corner of the wooden entry. The image is credited to the American Museum of Natural History, and this suggests it was taken during ethnologic studies undertaken on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation during the first decades of the 1900s.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
