Title: A Hidatsa hunting camp in the Black Hills with people standing in one lodge doorway
Date: 1885
Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86-1114, and "Hidatsa hunting camp Black Hills 1885".
Summary: A complicated image with an odd perspective making the mustached man on the right appear many times larger than the people who watch him from the doorway of one of several conical Hidatsa hunting lodges. The scaffold of the drying rack, strung with meat strips, seems, by the same trick of perspective to rise from the lodges themselves. A bundle sits in front of the timber lodges, and a hillside rises between the campsite and bare trees in the background. Notes on the back indicate the image dates from 1885 at a Black Hills, Dakota Territory location.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
