Collection: 00086 - Paul Ewald Photograph Collection
Folder: 0021
Item: 01123
Title: A woman and child bend to start a fire in a tent and tipi camp
Date: Circa 1910
Inscription/Marks: On the front: "16" in pencil. On the back: col. 86-1123, and postcard marks.
Summary: A woman in a long dark dress bends over a bucket and sticks that will become the campfire of a tent and tipi camp. Two wall tents, one with a dog at rest outside it, the other with an empty wagon by it, are behind a beautifully decorated tipi. The design on the Siouan style tipi is of stylized horses and mounted riders. It is likely this postcard photograph was taken around 1910 by Frank Fiske, featuring scenes from the Standing Rock Reservation. The tipis would appear to be associated with the Sioux Indians.
