Title: Goodbird, Willie Hale, and another man at work skinning a cow

Inscription/Marks: On the front: "B-2-1916, which is associated with the Gilbert Wilson collection at the Minnesota Historical Society. On the back: col. 86-1359.
Summary: Willie Hale, Edward Goodbird, and another man, possibly Pete Hale, are skinning a newly slaughtered cow. Each man uses a short but sharp metal knife. The cow has been arranged with its belly up. With the exception of Goodbird, the men wear brimmed western hats, and all wear work clothes. Two other cows watch with some curiosity from a safe distance. This is one of a number of sequential photographs detailing the Hidatsa routinely butchered animals of this size. Different types of animals were butchered in distinctly different ways according to the traditions of the Hidatsa people. Taken in 1916, during the Gilbert L. Wilson ethnographic study of the Hidatsa living on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, and associated with his collection housed in the Minnesota Historical Society.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
