Title: Little Sioux and Bear's Teeth with twenty other men of the Arikara medicine fraternities beside the medicine lodge

Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86-1407, "28", "20", and "2nd from left-Little Sioux".
Summary: Arranged in front of the large Arikara medicine lodge are twenty men representing the nine medicine fraternities of their tribe. One row stands behind a row of seated men. The second man from the left is Little Sioux, and the last man standing on the right side is Bear's Teeth. All the men are attired in the trappings that identify them as belonging to a specific group. These are: Ghost, Black-tail Deer or Branched Horn, Buffalo, Kohnit, Big Foot or Duck, Moon or Owl, Mother Night or Young Dog, and Bear. Over all these groups was the Principal Medicine, the leader of which was Crow's Ghost at this time. Edward S. Curtis took the photograph in 1908 on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Many of these images were published with accompanying descriptive text in Volume 5 of his famous 20 volume series of "The North American Indian".

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
