Title: "Daughters of a Chief" by Curtis (Two young Ogalala women ride on horseback into a tipi camp)

Inscription/Marks: On the front: deep creases to frame a smaller section, pencilled numbers, and the identification of subjects as well as the title. On the back: col. 86-1412, various numbers "184", "2", and "x2595", "Wounded Knee"-crossed out, "Big Road's Daughters, and "Light Struck".
Summary: The Edward Curtis photograph is titled "Daughters of a Chief", and shows the backs of two young Ogalala women in regalia riding into a tipi camp. The Ogalala are one of the seven tribes of the Teton Sioux. One girl wears a dress decorated with elk teeth, her hair tightly braided, and heavily beaded leggings. Her Horse also has beaded accessories. The second girl wears a white deerskin dress with beaded shoulders, and braids. Her horse is accessorized with beaded strips. Both women wear concho belts and blankets wrap their waists. One horse is dark, the other appaloosa. A tent and a tipi are set in the field toward which the riders head. A high butte is on the horizon. This is a photograph by Edward S. Curtis, taken in 1907 Many of these images were published with accompanying descriptive text in Volume 3 of his famous 20 volume series of "The North American Indian". The girls are identified as twin daughters of Big Road, a survivor of the Custer Massacre and a traditionalist involved in the Ghost Dance Movement. Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
