Title: A member of the Buffalo medicine fraternity of the Arikara dances outside a the ceremonial earth lodge

Inscription/Marks: The image has been folded into threes in the manner of a tripych. On the back: col. 86-1425, and "52".
Summary: Just outside the large ceremonial medicine lodge in the Beaver Creek camp, a man of the Buffalo medicine fraternity dances around a slender willow that has been wrapped in cloth. He is in the regalia of his fraternity, including the massive buffalo headdress, and feathered dance fan. A distance from him, other men are involved in other ritual activity. A man dances holding a large bundle of sage, and a group of six or seven men gather around the pile of offerings that have been mounded on the sacred cedar. Tents of the camp are visible. Photographed by Edward S. Curtis in 1908 on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Many of these images were published with accompanying descriptive text in Volume 5 of his famous 20 volume series of "The North American Indian".

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
