Stiles of Rocky River, Ohio passed away from heart failure on January 13, 2011. Charles Stiles was Vice President of Operations for Pickands Mather & Co. when he retired in 1984. He was recognized and well respected by many in the Mining and Steel industry during his 30 years of service. Charlie was born April 27, 1919 in Fort Yates, North Dakota. He received his B. S. degree in civil engineering from North Dakota State University in 1941. Prior to the mining industry he was involved in several large construction projects for Anaconda; served as an engineering supervisor with the U. S. Corps of Engineers; an officer in the Navy during World War II; and also worked with the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. In 1954 Stiles joined the Pickands Mather & Co. organization at their new taconite mining and processing facilities in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. At Erie Mining Company he was the Chief Plant Engineer and involved in the start-up and operations of the new taconite plant. He was subsequently promoted to the position of Assistant General Manager. In 1976 Stiles was transferred to the corporate office of Pickands Mather & Co. in Cleveland, Ohio to head up a task force developing a feasibility study for an iron ore operation on the Ivory Coast of Africa. Following this assignment he was named the General Manager of Operations for all of Pickands Mather & Co. iron ore operations in Minnesota; Ontario and Quebec Canada; and Tasmania, Australia. Stiles was promoted to Executive Vice President of Operations and continued in this role until he retired. Following his retirement, Stiles formed his own consulting company and continued to work in the mining industry, primarily with Pickands Mather & Co. in their iron ore and coal mining operations in West Virginia and Kentucky – until 1992. Charlie was former president for the Cleveland Chapter of Mended Hearts and was recognized several times for his dedication to this organization, of which he served for 16 years. His family includes Olive, his loving wife of 66 years; his six children Charles Richard (Dick), Ray, Sandra Sersha, John, Gale Bordner and Mary; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his brother Ralph Stiles and sister Alberta (Sis) Berry. The Stiles family held a private celebration of Charles life on Sunday, January 16th at a local funeral home. A memorial service will take place in the spring, so the extended family and friends can gather on Saturday, April 30 at 11 AM at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 2256 Clague Rd., Westlake, Ohio. Donations can be made in Charles honor to the Cleveland Chapter of Mended Hearts. Summary: Includes prints and negatives of portraits, agriculture, education, wildlife, hunting, Frank Fiske studio portraits, and some views of South Dakota. Fiske’s Native American photographs include portraits, Indian gatherings and ceremonies, boarding schools, Indian houses and dwellings, and Native American agriculture. Fiske’s documentation of daily life on the reservation includes such shots as Sioux customers waiting for a Fort Yates trading store to open; a Sioux dance in the streets of Fort Yates; a plow issue before the agency boarding school; an encampment of tipis, including those traditionally painted; and three Indian men being taxied off the reservation to join the army in WWI.
