Title: Fighting prairie fire, New England (N.D.)
Date: Circa 1915
Creator: Johnson, Robert T.
Inscription/Marks: "Prairie fire fire fighters"--Handwritten on back of postcard.
Summary: People work with shovels, sacks, and other items to put out a prairie fire burning somewhere in North Dakota.||A prairie fire in a rural area in the 1880s or 1890s depended on hard work and many hands for control. These people are hurrying to beat the fire out with wet gunny sacks, hoes, and shovels. If they can't control the fire, it might burn up houses, barns, hay stacks, and crops in the fields. Many pioneers routinely plowed fire breaks around their houses and hay stacks to avoid losing their summer’s work to a prairie fire.
