Title: Gas boat Expansion at dock on the Missouri River

Inscription/Marks: [info-Vessel documentation records from the Port of Pembina, North Dakota, 1885-ca 1959.] The original stern-wheel steamboat called Expansion was crushed by ice at Bismarck in March 1910. Part of the hull and superstructure were reused in the gasoline motor vessel also called Expansion built in Bismarck in 1910 and dismantled in 1929. Frank Fiske served as an assistant steamboat captain prior to his lifelong work as a studio photographer, mostly associated with Fort Yates, N.D. He learned the trade from S.T. Fansler, post studio photographer, and remained in Fort Yates to document the town, the Standing Rock Agency, and the changing ways of the frontier. Fiske was also a writer, and served for a time as a newspaper editor, and wrote a popular column carried in many newspapers. He was best known for his Indian photographs, which depicted everyday Indian life, as well as studio views.
Summary: Gas boat Expansion is moored along the shore of the Missouri River. Crew stands on produce bags and coal on the bow of boat. Captain and engineer stand on bridge next to cabin. Planks lead to boat landing. In the stern is a cabin with a wood stove.

Summary: Includes prints and negatives of portraits, agriculture, education, wildlife, hunting, Frank Fiske studio portraits, and some views of South Dakota. Fiske’s Native American photographs include portraits, Indian gatherings and ceremonies, boarding schools, Indian houses and dwellings, and Native American agriculture. Fiske’s documentation of daily life on the reservation includes such shots as Sioux customers waiting for a Fort Yates trading store to open; a Sioux dance in the streets of Fort Yates; a plow issue before the agency boarding school; an encampment of tipis, including those traditionally painted; and three Indian men being taxied off the reservation to join the army in WWI.
