Two-Gun Hart.[history-Officers make booze raids Sioux County Pioneer Thursday 01-07-1926 p01] Officers Make Booze Raid Get many victims besides lot of evidence and other paraphernalia. Superintendent E. D. Mossman, who insists upon keeping intoxicating liquors of all kinds off from the Standing Rock reservation has been making it very miserable for those engaged in the traffic during the past week and his activities will be continued until the reservation is as dry as the Sahara desert. He has as an able assistant, R. J. (Two-Gun) Hart, who is recognized as a most crafty enforcement officer. Their first arrest was an accident. Two young fellows, brothers, hailed them on the road between here and McLaughlin through in South Dakota, they being without gas. The enforcement officers gave them the gas and discovered them more or less intoxicated. Upon further investigation they found the men had booze upon them and they were induced to offer the officers a drink. And later they were able to get them to sell them two quarts of whiskey, real Canadian stuff, two for $15 or $8 per. They had about eight quarts with them but started from the Canadian border with 92 bottles and had made numerous trips. They were taken to Timber Lake and before a United States commissioner one was bound over to the United States court. The defendant is John A. Scherbinske and hails from Kulm. His car, a Chevrolet coupe was also confiscated. His partner, a brother, was found not implicated and was turned loose. The officers also picked up a Ford car in South Dakota. Four Indians being in it and there was found one half gallon of booze. The occupants were taken to Timber Lake for arraignment and the car confiscated. New Year’s eve, Mose Wilkie, Henry Stewart and Sidney Claymore happened to be at Solen at a dance and there picked up one, Alfred Jensen, with a bottle of moon. He was brought before Justice Thomas Short in Fort Yates and put up a bond of $300 to appear at the next term of district court. He lives across the line in Morton County. On December 20, Johannus Schulz, who lives northeast of McLaughlin, in South Dakota was arrested by the local officers and put under $1000 bond to appear in Corson County court. Here they grabbed a still, coil, 27 bottles of beer and paraphernalia in connection with operations. A raid was made in the vicinity of Selfridge Monday and seemed very successful. John Klingler was arrested and his place searched. There they got a still, six gallons of whiskey, 100 bottles of beer and mash. He appeared before G. W. Hokanson, U. S. Commissioner and was bound over to the U. S. Court His bonds of $1500 were furnished by Segur Robinson and W. H. Ordway signing. On the place of Barney Bonagofsky the officers got a still and mash. At Charles Arndt's two copper stills, coils and a small amount of whiskey and bottles. At the Charles Snyder place 45 bottles of beer was found and lots of empties. The last three named defendants were not at home but word left for them to appear here. They appeared later and put up bonds. Tuesday, Mr. Hart and Jesse Graybear took a circle up around Cannon Ball and with Farmer R. H. Shipman picked up Frank Slawa across the Missouri River from that point and confiscated a five gallon jug of moonshine. He was ordered to appear at Fort Yates and furnish a bond for his appearance in U. S. Court. The officers still are actively engaged in hunting out violations and there will probably be more arrests. All the officers engaged were deputy special officers and besides those mentioned above who have taken part in various raids were J. H. Brott, Eugene Bearking, Sam Red Pheasant, Jesse Graybear and Francis Mossman.
