Title: Bertha L. Norland and Marie Nelson compile the National Survey of Registered Nurses for North Dakota Bismarck Burleigh County (N.D.)
Date: 4/7/1941
Creator: LaLonde, Leo --1911-1977
Inscription/Marks: [Bismarck Tribune Monday April 7, 1941 p03] North Dakota Joins U. S. In Counting Its Nurses. North Dakota has joined with the nation in inventorying America's registered nurses under the national defense program. Already 800 nurses have replied to questionnairs mailed in this state. Miss Bertha Norland of Bismarck, special state agent for the U.S. public health service in charge of North Dakota's survey, said Monday 1,500 questionnaires have been mailed. Because lists are incomplete, Miss Norland requested any registered nurses, regardless of whether they are still registered, to make application at her capitol office for questionnaires. "We are attempting to contact all registered nurses in this state and returning a questionnaire will not obligate a nurse for army or navy service," she said. Nurses are requested, however, to state whether they would accept an assignment immediately with armed forces or whether they could accept assignment in case of war emergency. Miss Marie Nelson, assistant to Miss Norland, said in a large number of cases nurses have indicated they would accept immediate assignments. Many others, particularly married women, have indicated they would enter the service in case of war. Miss Norland explained younger nurses would be moving into army and navy service and there would be a need for older professional nurses to step in and fill gaps in the nursing field at home.
Summary: Bertha L. Norland (Smith 1907-1975) and Marie Nelson (Bender 1920-2015) compile the results of the National Survey of Registered Nurses in North Dakota that was sent to all registered nurses in North Dakota.
