Title: "Honest" John Burke addressing a crowd on Main Avenue, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: Circa 1905
Inscription/Marks: The top left corner is missing. On the back: 0071-26, and postcard marks.
Summary: Sometime before his terms as governor, "Honest" John Burke stands on a platform in a crowd of people, men and women, in downtown Bismarck (N.D.). His arms are outstretched as he delivers an oration of some sort. His jacket carries two ribbons, which cannot be read. All around him are people in hats and coats, some standing, others sitting in chairs which have been set up in Main Avenue. Flags have been strung, banner like from wires behind Burke. St. Alexius Hospital, in the old Lamborn Hotel building on the corner of 6th Street and Main is a block or two east of the rally. Off to the side of the speaker's platform is a canvas tent, and next to it is a horse. On the tent is a sign "See this great freak of nature, part cow and horse...Burleigh County (N.D.).". People in the two-story building by the tent are listening from the upstairs windows. Burke was the 10th governor of the state, serving from 1907-1913, later going to Washington, D.C. From 1913 to 1921, Burke was Treasurer of the United States, under President Woodrow Wilson. From the dark color of his hair, and the buildings that are visible on the north side of Main Avenue, it seems likely this picture dates from before the election of 1906, after which he served as governor. He was in the state House of Representatives in 1891, and the state senate from 1893-1896.(From Marian Burke)
