Title: View from the living room to the dining room at the Old Governor's Mansion, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: 1907-1913
Creator: Burke photo
Inscription/Marks: On the back: "#1", the state stamp, and "00701-31".
Summary: Heavy curtains hanging in the wide doorways of the living and dining rooms of the Old Governor's Mansion in Bismarck (N.D.). Built by Asa Fisher in 1884, in the Victorian Stick Style, the house was sold to the state of North Dakota to become a residence for governors and their families, in 1893. The house had a front entry hall bisecting the house, and it is the drafts from the entry door that are controlled by the curtained doorways. The pocket doors were closed less frequently than the curtains, as in was easier for people to move about and carry things without shifting wooden doors. All that is visible of the living room is a typical Victorian era spindle chair. The dining room table gleams with polish, and a heavy sideboard with a mirror is against the west wall of the room. The photograph came to the State of North Dakota from the daughter of Gov. Burke, in December 1975, and dates from that family's occupancy, 1907-1913.
