Title: The William Langer family in the living room of their Avenue A home, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: circa 1940
Creator: William Langer family
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0071-32.
Summary: A scottie-dog sits on the carpet at the feet of Mr. William Langer, and her daughters. They all sit on a floral couch by the fireplace in their 114 W. Avenue B, Bismarck (N.D.) home. In a comfortable chair by them is the patriarch of the family, William Langer. Langer, born in Casselton (D.T.) in 1886, was a long-time player in politics. Married in 1918 to Lydia Cady, whom he met when a student in New York City. Trained as a lawyer, "Wild" Bill Lange became one of the most colorful characters in North Dakota politics. He served as the state's 17th and 21st governors, despite scandals which flurried around him. The terms he served were from 1932-1934, and from 1937-1939. He was a United States Senator from 1941-1959. He and his wife had four daughters. The youngest two, Cornelia and Mary, are in this picture. Langer wears a dark suit and tie, his wife a dark dress with a brooch. The young daughters, ages roughly 12 and 16, wear sweaters and knee-length skirts. The youngest 's skirt is a plaid kilt, and she wears and knee-socks. The living room has a brick fireplace, many paintings on the floral wall-papered walls. Behind the couch is a short set of steps having a small landing from which starts the staircase up to the second floor, or another set of stairs leading down into the kitchen. It appears as though this photograph dates from after the terms of the Langer governorships. The photograph comes to the collection from the daughter who became Mrs. F. Gokey.
