Title: Two workers relax in the carriage house at the Old Governor's Mansion, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: 3/18/1953
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0071-39-04, and Mar. 18, 1953.
Summary: Two male employees for the Old Governor's Mansion take a break and have a smoke in room in the carriage house. A beadboard wainscoting forms the lower wall, vertical boards the upper. A towel bar and several mismatched shelves share the wall with a photograph of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a calendar, and a framed picture of a small boy feeding a baby with a bottle. A leather coat hangs on a side wall. The men face each other across a table, an ashtray is between them and one man holds a cigarette. The younger man is casually dressed and tie-less. The older man wears a knit sweater and appears to have a squint in one eye. It is possible that these men are inmates from the State Penitentiary, as the custom was to employ trusted prisoners to work taking care of the governor and his house. Taken on March 18, 1953, this dates to the Governor C. Norman Brunsdale tenure in the residence, 1951-1957.
