Item: 00039_22
Title: Man thought to be the chauffeur Phil Fetch at the Carriage house of the Old Governor's Mansion, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: Circa 1955
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0071-39-22, "no date", "22", "ca. 1950s", and "note siding and overhead type door".
Summary: A nicely dressed man in a suit stands in front of the garage doors of the Carriage House at the Old Governor's Mansion, Bismarck (N.D.). An older man, likely Phil Fetch, long-time chauffeur for the governors of North Dakota, looks off to the side. He and his family made their home in the quarters provided in the Carriage House. Taken at some point in the later part of the 1950s, it is of note that the original narrow clapboards have been covered over with wider boards, likely made with asbestos. Most probably taken at the end of the Brunsdale years, 1951-1957, or in the last years of the use of the property by state governors. The mansion was replaced during the Davis terms, 1957-1961, with a modern residence on the grounds of the Capitol.
