Item: 00042
Title: The old Governor's Mansion, Bismarck (N.D.) postcard
Date: 1913-1914
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0071-42, post card marks, and "Governors mansion where we lived".
Summary: This postcard photograph shows the Old Governor's Mansion in Bismarck (N.D.) before many of the alterations to it had been made. Built in 1884 by As Fisher, a local businessman, the Victorian house was sold to the state of North Dakota to be used as a home for future governors. It was so used from 1893 until 1960. In the years of its use, however, changes were made both to the interior and to the exterior. In this image, the house appears to be painted white, but has the original fence, porch skirting and decorative elements. The trees in the yard are mature. From the collection of the Hanna family. Gov. Hanna was in office from 1913-1917. Likely this photograph is from one of the first years of the Hanna term, before the fence was removed.
