Item: 00047
Title: Living room of the Old Governor's Mansion, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: Circa 1940
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0071-47.
Summary: Two identical images share this page. The scene is of the living room, or double parlor of the Old Governor's Mansion, Bismarck (N.D.). Originally built in 1884 by Asa Fisher, the home is Victorian in design. Purchased in 1893 for use by the Governors of North Dakota, and their families, it was used to that purpose until 1960, when a new residence was built. Each family decorated using a mix of their personal furniture and possessions and property supplied by the state. In this image, it is certainly a mix of furniture more modern in design than the early Victorian decor. The floors of both rooms have oriental carpets, and upholstered armchairs and a comfortable couch are arranged with lamps at hand, and a few tables. The piano is in the right foreground, and was property of the state. Undated, but the lack of fussy Victorian clutter indicates a date around the second world war.
