Summary: Three-quarter view of log cabin with a pitched roof cover with sod set among trees on the North Dakota State Capital grounds. The door and two windows are visible. A leaf covered lawn is in the foreground. A framed sign to the photo left of the door announces: "The Roosevelt Cabin. This is the oringal cabin occupied by THEODORE ROOSEVELT for three years when he was a cattle owner in Western NORTH DAKOTA 1883-1886." This is the original image for half-tone printed copy A4331-00002. Theodore Roosevelt came to North Dakota first in 1883 to hunt buffalo. This was his cabin on the Maltese Cross (also known as Chimney Butte) Ranch. It was originally located 7 miles south of Medora. While Roosevelt was president, the cabin was exhibited in St. Louis and Portland. After the tour, the cabin was moved to the state capitol grounds, where it remained until 1959, when the National Park Service moved it back to the Badlands.
