Summary: Three-quarter view of log cabin with a pitched roof cover with sod set among trees on the North Dakota State Capital grounds. The door and two windows are visible. A leaf covered lawn is in the foreground. This version of the Hoskins-Meyer photo is halftoned and is copied from a book with the caption: "The 'Roosevelt Cabin' At Bismarck, North Dakota. This cabin measures sixteen by twenty-eight feet. It contains but a single room. In all probability it is the cabin formerly on the Chimney Butte Ranch and occupied by Mr. Roosevelt during the time that he stayed there." Theodore Roosevelt came to North Dakota first in 1883 to hunt buffalo. This was his cabin on the Maltese Cross (also known as Chimney Butte) Ranch. It was originally located 7 miles south of Medora. While Roosevelt was president, the cabin was exhibited in St. Louis and Portland. After the tour, the cabin was moved to the state capitol grounds, where it remained until 1959, when the National Park Service moved it back to the Badlands.
