Summary: Three quarter view of entrance and sides of the Bishop's Mansion from across the street. Formerly the Thompson House on 2nd Street and Thayer Avenue (122 ThayerAvenue), Bismarck (N.D.). [history] Built by Charlie Thompson who in 1885 obtained the contract to build the North Dakota State Capitol. He sold the mansion after completion of the capitol and moved to Tacoma (Wash.) It became eventually was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Welch who operated it as the Roanoke Hotel (1905-1910). The Roanoke Hotel was sold by the owners, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Welch to the Bismarck Diosese for use as the residence for the bishop. When Bishop Ryan moved to a new residence on 420 Raymond Street, it was taken over by the Benedictine Community. who renamed it and reopened it as the St. Vincent's Home for the Aged. It was sold when new quarters were built for the home.
