Date: 1911-1926
Creator: Fiske, Frank Bennett,--1883-1952
Inscription/Marks: [history] The Benton, a gas powered sternwheel was a Benton Packet company boat. She was rebuilt in 1911 and dismantled by 1928. I.P. Baker owned the Benton Packet Company, which was headquartered in Bismarck. The advent of railroads spelled the end for the river navigation business, and Baker's last boat ran in 1926.The Ida was built in Fort Yates in 1911 and owned by Oscar Bauman. It was sunk by ice at Fort Yates in May 1919. [history Steamboat Benton- http://www.rfrajola.com/ks/ks1.pdf] The Benton was a stern wheeler of about 400 tons, measuring 197’ x 33’ x 5’, built at Pittsburg in 1875, and was one of the famed “mountain boats” owned and operated by T. C. Power & Bros “Block P Line”. It had a long and remarkable career during the Indian Wars and the pioneer days in Dakota and Montana Territories. She sank on July, 18, 1897 after running into a drawbridge at Sioux City. [history-Yankees and Rebels on the Upper Missouri: Steamboats, Gold and Peace by Ken Robison] 1867 Steamboat Ida Stockdale: Captain Marsh brought this new-construction boat from Pittsburgh to Fort Benton, arriving on June 16. After bringing a second load, including passengers and cargo from the wreck steamer James H. Trover, to Fort Benton on June 29, the Ida Stockdale took the Trover’s machinery down to Fort Buford. Passing downriver, the Ida Stockdale was hailed 220 miles below Fort Buford by the military, which wanted Captain Marsh to return to Fort Benton for a third time to convey Major General Alfred Terry, commanding the Department of the Dakota, and his staff. Stopping at the new Camp Cooke for one day, the Ida Stockdale arrived at Fort Benton on August 5 and began a slow low-water return to St. Louis.
Summary: The stern wheeler Ida Stockdale, a ferry boat, is tied up at dock in the background photo left while the steamer Benton is paddling past heavily laden with a load of cargo. At least four men are visible on the decks.
