Inscription/Marks: [back-written] Mrs. Elizabeth Preston Anderson 2nd State President N.D. W.C. 1893-1933
Summary: Head and shoulders, vignetted, full face studio portrait of Elizabeth Preston Anderson wearing a high necked blouse and eyeglasses. Elizabeth Preston Anderson was president of the North Dakota chapter of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) for forty years. Though the organization’s main interest was in preserving and enforcing the prohibition law, the WCTU also favored woman suffrage. Mrs. Anderson, who lived in Tower City, oversaw the introduction of suffrage bills into the legislature and reported on legislative action on suffrage bills. Without her efforts, there would be almost no record of the partial approval and “loss” of the 1893 suffrage bill.
