Title: Santee Hall Indian Dance Lodge, Elbowoods (N.D.)

Inscription/Marks: [back-written] Fort Berthold Indian reservation. Santee hall, Indian dance lodge. Santee Hall Indian Dance Lodge. Stood in Missouri River bottoms or right bank above Elbowoods, N.D. ten or twelve miles. See N.D. History Jan-Ap 1955, p 44
Summary: A round wooden lodge with a cupola and flagpole on top. An unidentified man stands in front of the entrance. Grass is visible in the foreground.||This structure was a dance hall constructed by Mandan and Hidatsa tribal members who broke away from the leadership of Old Dog at Elbowoods. This group was known as the Santee Dancing Society, and was led by White Body and Bird-Lying-Down, on whose property the lodge was built. The site has since been flooded due to the construction of the Garrison Dam.

The A collection consists of items 4 X 5” or less, the B collection consists of items 5 X 7” or less, the C collection consists of items 8 X 10” or less, the D collection consists of items 11 X 14” or less, and the E collection consists of items larger than 11 X 14”.
