Date: 1872
Creator: Unknown
Inscription/Marks: [back] Camp Hancock, first called Camp Greeley 1872
Summary: Overview of log buildings with wood framed one story building behind flag on flagpole. Soldiers gather around doorway of a log building at Camp Hancock in Bismarck, Dakota Territory. Barrels and other material are strewn in front of log barracks. A flag flies from a pole next to the building, and railroad tracks bypass the camp in the foreground. The barracks and mess hall are in the foreground. The onestory structure to the left is the post surgeon's quarters, the present museum.[Camp Hancock was originally known as Camp Greeley, founded in 1872. The name changed the following year. The site initially was the supply depot for Fort Lincoln. The post, as seen here, became an office of the Weather Bureau after it was no longer needed to supply Fort Lincoln. Today the site is located in Bismarck on West Main Street.]
