Inscription/Marks: [front-written] By U.S.A. Ft. Rice D.T. Col. Otis Comdg. 1870
Summary: Two men on horseback are visible in the foreground of this sketch of Fort Rice made by an artist identified only as Voelkner. A flag flies over the fort buildings, and several soldiers are visible walking the grounds of the fort. This sketch of Fort Rice was drawn in 1864 by a man named Voelkner. The post has a stockade for protection. Many western posts did not have a stockade. The Army thought that a stockade indicated hostility and might provoke attacks. Forts Buford, Abraham Lincoln, and Stevenson did not have stockades.
