Summary: Sitting Bull is dressed in traditional regalia including a resplendent headdress and stands with Buffalo Bill Cody, wearing western wear in this full length portrait. Both man rest their hands on a rifle. Buffalo Bill Cody posed with Sitting Bull for a publicity photograph. Cody is making a symbolic gesture toward something, perhaps the West or the Future. Sitting Bull gazes quietly at the ground. Sitting Bull spent a few months on tour with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show in 1885. In 1890, General Miles asked Cody to talk to Sitting Bull and convince him to give up the Ghost Dance. Cody was anxious to help resolve the situation, but he was sent away from the reservation before he could meet with Sitting Bull.
