Title: WWI Veterans salute graves from Battle of Killdeer Mountain

Inscription/Marks: Veterans of the World War, and Dunn County, Post of American Legion, Includeing [sic] State Vice Commander. Inspecting the graves of the two Indian War Heroes. Who fell in the Battle of the Killdeer's, July 28, 1864.These two Indian War Heroes, Sergt George W. Northrop, Co. C, Brackett's Cav. and Horatio N. Austin, Co. D, Bracketts Cav. were buried in a lonely pasture, near where the Diamond C Ranch, is now located. They had to picket saddle horses over the spot where they buried these two soldiers so that the Indians would not find them. In 1914, these two headstones were placed in their memory. These two soldiers belonged to the train of emigrants from near Jorden, Minn. that left for the Gold Fields in Mont. in 1864.
Summary: World War I Veterans and members of the Dunn County Post of American Legion and State Vice Commander shown saluting graves of Sergeant George W. Northrup, Company C, Bracketts Cavalry and Horatio N. Austin, Company D, Brackett's Cavalry. Gravestones are surrounded by metal pipe fence. A barn or stable is visible in background on a hillside with the Killdeer Mountains on the horizon.
