Summary: Captain James L. Fisk poses for a portrait wearing a hat, a dark jacket, and a belt buckle with an eagle decoration. He holds a rolled piece of paper that has the word "westward" written on it.||Captain James L. Fisk guided several wagon trains across northern Dakota Territory to the gold fields of Montana. On September 3, 1864 the wagon train he was leading was attacked by Sioux at Deep Creek. The emigrants built embankments around their wagons, calling it Fort Dilts. They remained under siege until September 16.
