Title: Steamer F.Y. Batchelor at landing, Fort Buford (D.T.)
Date: 08/13/1878
Inscription/Marks: The photograph was taken on August 13, 1878, the morning after the Batchelor had reached Fort Buford from Bismarck, having made the quickest run on record between the two points: 55 hours and 25 minutes
Summary: The steamboat Batchelor ties up at Fort Buford in 1878. Many people stand on the decks of the boat and on the shoreline. The Batchelor carries a large load of logs or planks on one of its decks. Boats of this size brought passengers and supplies during the short navigation season on the Missouri River.||The steamboat F.Y. Batchelor, a sternwheel packet with a wood hull, was built in Freedom, Pa., and finished in Pittsburgh, in 1878. In 1885 she was sold to the Benton Packet Co., and made her last trip to Fort Benton in 1890. This was said to be the last commercial freight taken to the fort by steamboat. She was caught in winter quarters at Running Water, S.D., by ice, and was wrecked on Mar. 6, 1907. She was once captained by Grant Marsh. Photographer Frank Fiske was a cabin boy on the Batchelor between 1898 and 1900.
